Here at Dormers Wells our curriculum intends to develop Mathematical skills and knowledge and explore topics through conscious decision making and having an awareness of the learning of all pupils. Children should develop resilience and self-confidence in applying their learning skills. The collaboration between peers and the relationship between learners and their class teacher should drive the learning and inform the content, strategies and real-world contextualisation to maximise on the progress and learning opportunities. We aspire for our young learners to become Master of Mathematics by using the following mastery strategies:
In EYFS children are expected to have a deep understanding of numbers to 10, including the composition of each number to 14 – They should recognise quantities without counting up to 5. They are expected to automatically recall with rhymes and counting aids their number bonds. (including subtraction facts) Children will learn to recognise the pattern of the counting system and compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as the other quantity. Explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including evens and odds, double facts and how quantities can be distributed equally.
Children are introduced to our ‘mastery’ approach to learning. They are exposed to a resources both online and in class including; Maths No Problem, Power Maths, White Rose and NCTEM materials which help to ensure their progression throughout our school. We use a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach to introducing, exploring and applying mathematical concepts. Great emphasis is placed on the use of prior knowledge acquired in EYFS to inform new concepts studied. Maths is used to help support children’s reading and writing skills in the form of opportunities to explaining and demonstrate using mathematical vocabulary.
KS2 continues the mastery approach with greater focus on applying their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects. Children gain greater depth of understanding by linking mathematical concepts such as the use of number in geometry and measurement. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.
Year 4 statutory multiplication assessment: Children are expected to complete timetables test online. All children have their own timetables booklet to use during soft start lessons and at home to develop their fluency and accuracy skills. They also have access to the Times Tables Rock stars website. Dormers Wells Primary School is a Right Respecting School we follow the UN Conventions Rights for children where we teach children about rights, through rights and for rights. We believe children who have understanding of their rights also understand how others and how they should be treated. Also, we aim to create a safe environment and atmosphere for our children. Rights Respecting gives children a voice to express themselves and challenge any injustices. They feel empowered to access information and make informed decisions about their learning, health and wellbeing. As a school, we want to equip our children to advocate for rights where they can promote equality, fairness and safety.
