geography

An inquisitive geographer develops a love and fascination for the diverse places, processes and people that make up our planet from early on in their lives. When a child feels a sense of place and belonging, they are able to relate to the world around them and will begin to understand how geography can have an impact on their lives on a more meaningful and personal level. At Dormers Wells Infant and Junior School, we believe each child should be given the opportunity to find their ‘inner geographer’ and fulfil their desires to learn more. Children should be able to develop a real sense of Southall, who they are and their heritage and what makes our local area unique.

Our aim is to encourage our young, aspiring geographers to enquire, question and challenge what they are learning through their critical thinking. Pupils should have a cohesive understanding of the global world, using a range of practical skills to help them explore both human and physical features around them. By exploring the great outdoors, pupils will be able to have hands on experiences, whilst building on their curiosities and fascination. As a school, we hope our geographers will go on to do great things and possibly follow the footsteps of some well-known geographers. Michael Jordan, who became the greatest player in the history of NBA studied Geography at the University of North Caroline. As well as this, our future King, Prince William, also graduated from St Andrews University with a degree in Geography! We want to open up as many doors and possibilities for our children so they have a bright and successful future ahead.

EYFS Implementation

KS1 Implementation

In EYFS, pupils learn about their immediate environment and local area and talk about the similarities and differences which they can see around them.  Pupils are encouraged to explore the wider world through discussing their own experiences of holidays, visits and books.

In KS1, pupils use simple fieldwork (covid permitting) and observation skills to learn about key human and physical geographical features in our local area. Through map skills, pupils develop their use of directional language and knowledge of points of the compass. Pupils widen their geographical knowledge by learning about countries in the United Kingdom and the Coasts and Seas which surround them. Pupils explore the contrasts between rural and urban settings before investigating the wider global world and its features.

KS2 Implementation

Useful Links

In KS2, pupils learn about other, more distant countries, climate, major cities and significant human and geographical features of Europe, North America and South America. Pupils study both the human and physical geography of these continents and compare different regions of the globe. Aspects of physical geography are further explored in units on Volcanoes, Rivers and Earthquakes and trade and economic links are investigated in a study of the Journey of Food around the World. Building on the skills they have acquired in KS1, pupils use atlases, globes, and digital technologies to enhance their understanding of the world around them. Local visits provide opportunities for pupils to develop fieldwork skills of observation, recording and measuring the world around them.

rights respecting school

Dormers Wells Primary School is a Right Respecting School we follow the UN Conventions Rights for children where we teach children about rights, through rights and for rights. We believe children who have understanding of their rights also understand how others and how they should be treated. Also, we aim to create a safe environment and atmosphere for our children. Rights Respecting gives children a voice to express themselves and challenge any injustices. They feel empowered to access information and make informed decisions about their learning, health and wellbeing. As a school, we want to equip our children to advocate for rights where they can promote equality, fairness and safety.
