At Dormers Wells Primary School we have chosen to learn Spanish as it is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world. Our intent is to equip pupils with the confidence and ability to communicate in a foreign language. We aim to develop language awareness by promoting positive attitudes to learning which will improve their communication skills and understanding of different cultures. This will be more transferable in the future workplace, as well as developing global citizenship.

Language is at the heart of all the learning a pupil does. It is how they receive knowledge, express themselves and communicate, from the very earliest stages.  The learning of a language should enhance their abilities to communicate and help to develop personal skills.

Learning a language helps the development of an understanding of the many purposes for which language is used. It promotes an awareness of the diversity of forms language can take. Children already have a broad understanding of the purpose, nature and functions of language by the time they begin learning a foreign language. Learning a foreign language will enhance this knowledge base.

Children are introduced to Spanish in Year 3 and receive a 30-minute lesson once a week. Lessons across the Key Stage support the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

By the end of Key Stage 2, children should be able to:

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding.
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words.
  • Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help.
  • Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures.
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words or phrases.
  • Present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences.
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing.
  • Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language.
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through use of a dictionary.
  • Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly.
  • Describe people, places, things and actions orally and writing.
  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied including (where relevant): feminine, masculine, and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English.

Dormers Wells Primary School is a Right Respecting School we follow the UN Conventions Rights for children where we teach children about rights, through rights and for rights. We believe children who have understanding of their rights also understand how others and how they should be treated. Also, we aim to create a safe environment and atmosphere for our children. Rights Respecting gives children a voice to express themselves and challenge any injustices. They feel empowered to access information and make informed decisions about their learning, health and wellbeing. As a school, we want to equip our children to advocate for rights where they can promote equality, fairness and safety.
