Physical education

At Dormers Wells Primary School, we strive to deliver a Diverse, Cohesive, Engaging & Stimulating curriculum that nurtures each child’s unique attributes through critical thinking and respect. We place the pupils’ social and emotional development at the heart of their education, certifying that all pupils can gain confidence, elevate their self-esteem, and develop active healthy citizens. We want children to grow and refine the essential skills to become lasting participants in sport and physical activity. Our curriculum teaches and progresses learners for a dynamic and healthy lifestyle by educating them about and the connection between good health and physical activity by providing opportunities to participate in an extensive range of physical activities.

EYFS

KS1

Physical education is delivered through the non-stop admission to the outdoor environment. Children will acquire the knowledge to make healthy choices in relation to food. We identify the significance of physical development in the Early Years as a vital sector of educationThe activities planned allow our children to be dynamic and collaborative and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement.

In KS1, children build on the confidence added in movement at EYFS.  Children learn to improve fundamental movement skills, become progressively competent and self-assured and access an expansive range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Children engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations. The effect of exercise on their body is also explored.

KS2

swimming

In lower KS2, Children commence to learn scoring structures and rules for these games and start to reflect about how they can work best as part of a team. More importance is placed on applying these skills in performance associated activitieand game scenarios

Lessons emphasize on evolving and relating the broad range of skills children have acquired during their time in KS1. In upper KS2, they will also get the chance to experience distinct roles in sport including as coach, performer and official. Children are invigorated to analyse their own performance, so that they can compare their performances with previous ones to achieve their personal best children continue to think about teamwork but look further intensely into the tactical side of games.

In Years 4, children attend swimming lessons at Dormers Wells Leisure Centre. Each class attends weekly lessons over the course of a term. Lessons are taught by specialist swimming instructors who assess the children at the start and end of the swimming course.

Children learn how to:

  •  Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  •  Use a range of strokes effectively
  •  Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
